四、报告摘要

The long term goal of this research is to develop technologies for accelerating orthodontic tooth movement. The purposes are to reduce the orthodontic treatment time, which will minimize orthodontics- induced side-effects and to increase treatment efficiency.  The orthodontic tooth movement can be accelerated by methods, such as surgical procedures, medicine, external stimulations including mechanical, optical, and magnetic field, which has been proven by researches. Commercial products have been marketed and procedures have been used in the clinic. However, clinical applications have resulted in controversial or inconsistent outcomes. The primary cause of the problems is inability of dose control. There are two fundamental issues: 1) uncertainty of optimal level of stimulation, called “dose”, and 2) inability to deliver the dose reliably.

My research has been focused on finding the optimal dose and developing technologies to ensure delivery of the dose to patient.  We have been studying the effects of different stimulation methods and trying to understand the factors affecting delivery of the stimulation. These will lead to effective methods for dose control for realizing accelerated tooth movement.

In this talk, the background information on orthodontic tooth movement will be provided. The current methods for accelerating tooth movement will be introduced and major problems will be discussed. Our approach to solving the problems will be demonstrated. This is an example of how to systematically solving biomedical problems through multidisciplinary engineering approach.
