四、报告摘要
There has been extensive research into fatigue phenomena and fatigue crack growth for at least 150 years. In the last 30 years the development of very sophisticated experimental techniques and portable high performance computing has greatly increased our ability to monitor crack growth and explore fundamental mechanisms. However, we can still only predict in an approximate way fatigue crack growth and residual lives, particularly for complex structures.
These lectures outline a personal view of some of the reasons why we have not made sufficient progress in understanding of fatigue phenomena and crack growth. The lectures will focus on several areas where current thinking is unclear and/or unresolved. In particular, they will focus on the complexities and approximations in service load assessment that are known to cause inaccuracies in life prediction and on considerations related to obtaining the effective driving force for crack growth and the controversies around crack closure and crack tip shielding.
The overall aim is to highlight, for early career researchers, some important issues that need to be borne in mind in fatigue research or design.
