  Abstract

Dr. Mattson presents his research on design exploration, which is the divergent/convergent process used to evolve and investigate multidisciplinary design space. He introduces design exploration as a valuable human-driven, often computer-assisted, process that represents an evolutionary step beyond the traditional convergent process of design optimization.

Presented in three parts, he shows that the purpose of design exploration is to facilitate discovery and to inform decision-making throughout the product development process. Part 1 lays a foundation by presenting a general product development theory. Part 2 explores multiobjective design space and discusses its value in the context of product development. Part 3 considers design exploration as it relates to one of Dr. Mattson’s passions: design for the developing world.
