学术讲座: Brittle Fracture Assessment for Steels – Calibration and Applications
主 讲 人:新加坡国立大学QIAN Xudong (钱旭东)
地 点:机械楼A810
时 间:2015年7月6日上午9:00
讲座内容:
Brittle or cleavage fracture imposes critical safety concerns to structures operating under a low ambient temperature, since catastrophic structural failure often occurs without prior warnings or plastic deformations. This presentation introduces a fundamental engineering approach, namely the Weibull stress model, to predict the probability of brittle/cleavage fracture applicable to typical steel materials. The calibration of this probability-based model utilizes the published experimental database developed in a five-year European Union project involving eleven countries. This seminar also discusses the application of the conventional mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity in estimating the Weibull stress values for predicting the cumulative probability of cleavage fracture failure. The engineering application showcases a pipe-type structure subjected to complicated sets of thermal-mechanical loading conditions.
主讲人简介:
Dr. QIAN Xudong is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He received his Bachelor (1st Class Honors) and PhD in Civil Engineering from NUS in 2000 and 2005, respectively. Prior to joining NUS as a faculty member, he worked as a post-doctoral research associate in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC). Prof Qian’s research interest focuses on experimental fracture mechanics, fracture and fatigue assessment for steel/offshore structures, welded tubular connections, steel-concrete-steel composite structures, and polymer composite materials for deep-water applications. Prof Qian has been serving as members in different Technical Committees for the International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress. He is also a member of the technical committee in American Society of Testing and Material E08 – Fatigue and Fracture.
