College of Education, Zhejiang University of Technology (College of Vocational and Technical Education), formerly known as the Technical Teachers Department of Zhejiang Institute of Technology, was founded in July 1985, and is one of the first departments in China to establish vocational and technical teacher education in general engineering colleges and universities. In 1999, Zhejiang Vocational Education Teacher Training Center was attached to our college. In 2000, it was approved as a national key construction vocational teacher training base. In 2014, it was selected as a pilot unit for Excellent Teacher Training Program by the Ministry of Education. In 2019, two provincial and ministerial-level scientific research think tank platforms were approved as Zhejiang Province’s New University Think Tank - Vocational Education Modernization Research Center and the Yangtze River Delta Education Integration Key Collaborative Project - Yangtze River Delta Industry-Education Integration and Vocational Education Development Research Institute.
The education discipline of the college is a first-class discipline in Zhejiang Province, with 5 second-level disciplines including vocational and technical education, educational technology, professional curriculum and teaching theory, higher education, and educational psychology. It has the right to confer a master’s degree in the first-level discipline of education, and the right to confer professional degrees of a master’s degree in education and a master’s degree in applied psychology. There are four school-level humanities and social science research centers, including the Vocational Education Development Research Center, the Technology and Education Development Research Center, the Robot Education Research Center, and the Social Harmony and Mental Health Promotion Research Center. There are 5 undergraduate majors including educational technology (normal), computer science and technology (normal), electrical engineering and automation (normal), mechanical engineering (normal) and applied psychology. Among them, educational technology and applied psychology are recognized as the first-class undergraduate majors in Zhejiang Province. At present, the college has more than 685 full-time undergraduate students, 161 full-time postgraduate students, and nearly 100 part-time postgraduate students.
Currently, the college has 75 faculty members, including 15 with senior professional titles and 20 with deputy senior professional titles. The proportion of full-time teachers with doctoral degrees is 70%. In the past five years, the faculty members have presided over 2 key projects of the National Social Science Foundation of China, more than 30 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Social Science Foundation of China, and more than 30 provincial and ministerial-level projects, and received nearly 40 million yuan in scientific research. The college has won more than 20 provincial and ministerial-level awards, including the Ministry of Education’s Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award for Higher Education Institutions, Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Award, and Zhejiang Provincial Philosophy and Social Science Research Outstanding Achievement Award, and more than 70 national inventions, utility patents and software copyrights. Students have won more than 10 national-level awards in major competitions such as the National College Student “Challenge Cup” Science and Technology Competition and the National Normal Student Skills Competition. In 2018, the college won the second prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award for Vocational Education.
The college has extensive exchanges and cooperation with foreign countries, and has established good cooperative relations with many foreign (overseas) institutions of higher learning and research institutions, and has carried out international talent training and training. In 2015, the college initiated the West Lake Forum on Modern Vocational Education, which has been held for four consecutive sessions and has become an influential high-level brand forum in the field of higher education and vocational education in China.
The college actively explores the characteristics and brand development of vocational teacher cultivation and training, and has set up more than 10 training programs at all levels, including national-level training for backbone teachers, “Zhejiang School” training for famous teachers and principals, Sino-foreign cooperation training and various training programs entrusted by other organizations. In ten years, it has trained more than 15,000 key teachers and more than 250 secondary vocational school principals.
Knowing is accomplished before action, and the way is in the teacher. Over the past 36 years, relying on the engineering advantages of Zhejiang University of Technology, the college has always insisted on taking root in vocational education, based on teacher training, strong characteristics of undergraduate education, strong level of postgraduate education, and strong brand of teacher education and training, and gradually formed a “moral education, collaborative innovation, compounding talents cultivation”. With the school-running characteristics of “Cultivating Talents”, it has cultivated a large number of compound and high-quality vocational education teachers and senior professionals in all walks of life, providing strong talent support, intellectual support and decision-making support for Zhejiang’s economic and social development. The development goal of the college is to become a high-level teaching and research college with distinctive characteristics of vocational education and a national reputation.
