College of Materials Science and Engineering, established in 2013 from the department of Novel Materials & Processing Engineering (provincial key discipline) of the College of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, has been developed to be an important base of professional training, scientific research and technical development for both of industrial and academic communities.
The college includes a provincial key discipline of Materials Science and Engineering, a provincial key laboratory of Plastic Modified and Processing Technology Research, a Provincial Platform of Plastic Technology Innovation，a Zhejiang international scientific and technological cooperation base for quantum information and intelligent materials，a Zhejiang-Russia Joint Research Center for Diamond Film and Its Functional Devices，and the college has managed Zhejiang Corrosion and Protection Academy and the Modified Plastics Research Breeding Base of China Plastics Processing Industry Association. The college has been awarded as a unit which has made outstanding contribution to Modified Plastics Industry of China and an allied unit of Zhejiang Polymer Materials Industrial Technology.
To date, the college has over 91 faculties, including 40professors, 43associate professors, and 82 percent of them hold a doctor's degree. Among the teachers, many of them are selected into national and provincial major talent projects, e.g. 1 teacher in “National Thousand Talents Plan Distinguished experts, 1 teacher is a winner of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, 1 teacher in “New Century Talents” by Ministry of Education, 5 teachers in “Qianjiang” Distinguished experts and 8 teachers in the first section of Zhejiang “151” Talents Project. At present, the college have the qualification to offer a first-class discipline doctoral program of Materials Science and Engineering, a first-class discipline master program of Materials Science and Engineering, three master programs of the second-class discipline, i.e. Materials Science, Materials Physics and Chemistry and Materials Processing Engineering, a professional master degree program of, Materials and chemical industry, and two undergraduate programs, i.e., Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Materials and Engineering. These two majors have been selected into the national first-class undergraduate major construction. Currently, around 1000 students are studying in our college, among whom there are over 400 undergraduates, over 500 graduates and doctoral graduates. Till now，over 4000 students have been graduated.
Utilizing the advantages of disciplines and talents, the college has formed a series of distinctive characteristics in key research direction in Polymer Materials and Engineering, Electronic and magnetic materials , New Energy Materials and Technology, Metal Materials and Surface Engineering, Material Processing and Control Engineering etc., which are well represented by more than 10 research awards including a 2nd prize of National Awards for Technological Invention, and 15 monographs and teaching materials in these areas. Each year, the college undertakes over 100 projects, including the prophase of “Project 973”, “Project 863”, International Technological Cooperative Project, projects sponsored by National Natural Science Fund, Provincial projects and the Ministry projects, as well as projects from industrial community Based on these projects, more than 50 million RMB funding is funded, 100 national invention patents are granted, and 100 academic articles are published, of which over 20 have been extracted by the top index agencies. In the case of facilities, we have standard lab of more than 10 thousand square meters and professional instruments and equipments valued more 80 million RMB.
Aiming at the major development needs of the country and the region, and focusing on the strategic plan of Zhejiang Province to build a highland of new materials science and technology innovation, the college has established Pinghu New Materials Research Institute of Zhejiang University of Technology, Wenzhou Science and Technology Research Institute, Sanmen Rubber Research Institute and Lanxi Polymer Materials Research Institute, established close scientific and technological cooperation relations with more than 160 domestic industry backbone enterprises, and established more than 30 enterprise joint research institutes.
From now on, College of Materials Science and Engineering will uphold the college motto, which means that the one who is beneficial to society must have perfect real skills and knowledge and the one who is a great talent must be supreme good in virtue. The college will dedicate personal training, scientific research, social service, and knowledge spreading, etc., to pursue the educational philosophy of “being perfect real and being supreme good” and the educational aim of “being a great talent”. Our college will become a high-level research college with distinctive characteristics through pragmatic refinement, exploration and innovation of all members.
