School of Design and Architecture was formally the Art School founded in 2002. In December 2019, Architecture , Urban and Rural Planning and this school were merged into School of Design and Architecture. This school now has 7 undergraduate majors such as Urban and Rural Planning, Architecture, Industrial Design, Environmental Design, Visual Communication Design, Public Art, Digital Media Arts. Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning and Industrial Design were selected as the national first-class undergraduate majors, Environmental Design was selected as the first-class undergraduate major of Zhejiang Province, Urban and Rural Planning is the full membership of Asian Planning Schools Association(APSA), and this major has passed the undergraduate education evaluation of Urban and Rural Planning by Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development for three times consecutively. Architecture of our school is the first and the only major among that of provincial colleges and universities passing the national undergraduate education evaluation of Architecture. All majors of the school are qualified to cultivate high-level talents with academic, professional and on-job postgraduates degrees.
The school now has over 1700 undergraduates, more than 380 graduates; more than 160 staff members, 19 teachers have senior professional titles, 51 teachers have associate senior professional titles, 1 committee member of sub-committee of Ministry of Education's Steering Committee on the Teaching of Industrial Design in Higher Educational Institutions. The school now has National Small and Medium-sized Enterprise Demonstration Platform of Public Service, Ministry of Science and Technology’s China-Italy Design Innovation center, Hangzhou Branch, Zhejiang Collaborative Innovation Platform of China Institute of Art Science and Technology, Zhejiang Art Science and Technology Research Center and Zhejiang Industrial Design Technology Innovation Service Platform, and some other discipline platforms. Zhejiang University of Technology’s Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Transformation and Upgrade Collaborative Innovation Center which we participated in was selected as the “2011 Collaborative Innovation Center” of Zhejiang Province for the year of 2016. The school has 1 national first-class programme, 1 National-level Quality Course, 1 Pilot Zone of National Talent Training Mode Innovation(cooperated), 12 provincial first-class programs, 1 provincial teaching innovation team, 1 provincial construction site of experimental demonstration center, 6 provincial virtual simulation experiment projects, 1 second prize of National Teaching Achievement, 2 first prizes of Provincial Teaching Achievement, 2 first prizes of Excellent Achievement of Provincial Educational Science Research. Over recent 5 years, the school has undertaken over 50 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects including major project of National Social Science Fund, received about 20 million Yuan for all kinds of scientific research projects annually. The school has published over 80 treatises and textbooks, obtained more than 20 authorized patents of invention. The school has established over 80 industry-university-research collaboration bases and over 20 school-enterprise joint research centers in all 11 cities of Zhejiang Province. Over recent years, the accumulated income from various design services have exceeded 100 million Yuan, the design production has created over 2 billion output value.
The School is committed to the principle of “Running with Zhejiang Spirit and Interacting with Regional Economy”, centered on the cultivation aims of small and medium-sized enterprise’s innovation driving, sustainable transition of small and medium size towns and cities, inclusive upgrading of digitalized life and inheritance and updating of regional culture. The school sticks to the features of the integration of “design + engineering + art” under the engineering background, aims to cultivate the composite innovative talents whom are theoretical research-based or creative or the type of engineering management with Chinese cultural and international vision, solid theoretical foundation and innovative design ability to meet the needs of regional economic and social development. Recent years, the teaching achievements of our school were highly recognized by the society and students. The admission scores of Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning and Industrial Design are the highest one among the scores of the same majors in provincial universities over a long period of time, meanwhile, the admission scores of art and design majors are also higher than the scores of provincial universities on a long-term basis. Our school’s employment rate of undergraduate remained above 95% multiple years in a row. The enrollment rate of undergraduate is also kept going up, the rate broke 28% in 2020. The graduates who are recommended for admission to be a postgraduate account for 10% of the graduates that year. The employers of our graduates include Alibaba, Baidu, Netease, Hikvision, Rd Design, Zhejiang Province Institute of Architectural Design and Research, Greentown and other famous enterprises. Among our undergraduate graduates, some of them were admitted by Harvard University, Yale University, Royal College of Art and other top 10 universities in the QS World University Rankings and design schools. Over the years, students of our school achieved outstanding results in many domestic and overseas major design competitions. They won over 400 prizes in authoritative design competitions such as China College Students' 'Internet Plus’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, “Challenge Cup” National Undergraduate Curricular Academic Science and Technology Contest, Red Dot Award, K-DESIGN AWARD, Golden Monkey King Awards, China Environmental Art Design Annual Award, China Creative Packaging Design Award, National Advertising Art Design Competition For College Students, China Universities Industrial Design Competition, obtained more than 1000 authorized patents.
