The School of Public Administration in Zhejiang University of Technology was founded in 2003formerly known as the School of Politics and Public Administration.

 

With the motto of “Politics Accumulating Virtue, Practice Serving the Public” and the spirit of “Harmony and Tolerance, Erudition and Innovation”, School of Public Administration insists on student-oriented education, cultivating a large number of high-quality talents in public administration.

 

The school has a master’s degree in public administration and a master’s degree in public administration (MPA). It has established secondary disciplines including administration, public policy analysis, educational economics and management, social security, etc. The school is a leader in the fields of grass-roots social governance, digital governance, risk governance and security, higher education governance, circular economy, and low carbon development. The school now has two undergraduate majors, Public Service Management and Administration Management. In 2020, Administration Management was successfully selected as “National First-class Undergraduate Major Construction Point” and became one of the first majors selected in “Double Ten-thousand Plan”.

 

As of December 2021, there are 806 students enrolled in the School of Public Administration, including 394 undergraduates, 51 academic postgraduates, and 361 MPA students. The school has always adhered to the guiding ideology of “teaching is the foundation of the college and research is the road to strength”. It attaches great importance to the cultivation of students' ideological and political quality, professional knowledge and practice ability, sticks to the “Five-One Project” of undergraduate training to encourage students to take an active part in student work, club activities, social practice, innovation contests and other activities, strives to improve the comprehensive quality of students. In recent years, the employment rate of college undergraduate graduates has been maintained above 96%, a large number of excellent talents in public service management and administrative management have been delivered to society.

 

The school has more than 50 faculty members, including 12 with senior titles and more than 20 with associate titles. There are 1 national high-level young talents, 1 national candidate of 100 million talents project, 1 special professor of “Qianjiang Scholars”, 5 provincial “151 Talents Project” and 2 provincial “Zhijiang Young Social Science Scholars”. The faculty members graduated from Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Renmin University of China, as well as the Chinese University of Hong Kong, University College Dublin, and other famous universities in China and abroad. There are nearly 40 full-time faculty members with doctoral degrees, and many of them have the experience of visiting top international institutions such as Yale University and the University of Chicago for one year.

 

In the past five years, faculty members have published more than 100 papers in SSCI-indexed journals, Management World, Sociological Research, Chinese Social Science Digest, and other well-known journals at home and abroad, as well as first-class academic journals, published and edited 13 scholarly monographs and textbooks. More than 20 national scientific research projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China and National Social Science Foundation of China have been added and undertaken, and more than 30 provincial and ministerial level or above projects have been awarded, such as the bidding project of major topics of philosophical and social science research of ministry of education, major bidding project of philosophy and social science planning of Zhejiang province, and key projects of soft science. As the first undertaker, the school has won two awards of Excellent Achievements in Higher Education research of the Ministry of Education and two awards of Excellent Achievements in Philosophy and Social Sciences of Zhejiang Province.

 

Based on the development needs of the country and Zhejiang province, the school has steadily been promoting the transformation and development, actively intervening in the decision-making consulting research in the fields of grass-roots social governance, risk management and security, Internet and public opinion governance, digital government and urban governance, and low-carbon economy, etc., and making positive contributions to local economic and social development. The decision-making advice written by the faculty members has received positive instructions from national leaders and members of the Central Political Bureau, the Minister of Propaganda, as well as major leaders of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, and Zhejiang Province. Teachers' horizontal research projects continue to grow rapidly, the number of research funds reached more than 17 million yuan, and the per capita research performance of teachers in the school ranks among the highest in the university. The head of the discipline of public administration has been listed as the most influential scholar in Chinese philosophy and social sciences (management) for three consecutive years.

 

The school also has two think tank platforms, Zhejiang Provincial Public Opinion Research Center and Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Letters and Visits. Zhejiang Provincial Public Opinion Research Center was established in June 2014, which was approved by the Propaganda Department of Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee. It is the first professional research institute of social public opinion in the province, and the center was selected as the first batch of new think tanks of Zhejiang universities in 2017 and one of the first batch of key cultivation think tanks in Zhejiang Province in 2018; Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Letters and Visits was jointly established and managed by Zhejiang Public Complaints and Proposals Administration and the Zhejiang University of Technology in January 2021, which was a new type of think tank. In addition, the school also has several provincial and university-level research centers in the humanities and social sciences, such as Zhejiang Zhijiang Youth Social Construction and Shared Development Research Center, Hangzhou Institute of Reform and Development, Institute of Urban Development, and Research Center for Public Policy and Local Governance Innovation, etc.
