The College of science was established in 2000. It has two departments: the Department of Applied Mathematics and the Department of Applied Physics, and five undergraduate majors: Mathematics and applied mathematics, information and computing science, applied physics, photoelectric information science and engineering, data science and big data technology.
There are more than 200 teaching staff, including 23 professors, 70 associate professors, 153 doctoral teachers, more than 290 postgraduates，and more than 1000 undergraduates. One teacher won the national fund for Distinguished Young Scholars ，and one teacher served as a foreign academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.
The College of science has one national experimental teaching demonstration center (Physics Experiment Center), one national teaching team (teaching team of Basic Physics Series Courses), three national first-class majors (information and computing science, applied physics, photoelectric information science and Engineering), and one first-class major in Zhejiang Province (Mathematics and Applied Mathematics). Since 2001, it has won the first prize of higher education teaching achievement in Zhejiang Province for five consecutive times, and the second prize of the seventh national teaching achievement in 2014.
The College of science has two first-class discipline doctoral programs (Physics and Mathematics), one professional degree doctoral program (electronic information - Optical Engineering), three first-class discipline master programs (Mathematics, physics and Optical Engineering), one professional degree Master Program (Optical Engineering), one provincial first-class discipline (Physics).Two provincial scientific research platforms (Zhejiang Key Laboratory of quantum precision measurement, Zhejiang collaborative innovation center of quantum precision measurement), nine research institutes (Institute of optical engineering, Institute of astrophysics, Institute of optoelectronic intelligent technology, Institute of advanced optoelectronic technology, Institute of optics, Institute of analysis and geometry and Institute of data Science, Institute of condensed matter physics, Quantum Science and Technology Center).
In recent years, it has undertaken scientific research projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the natural science foundation of Zhejiang Province. Teachers' academic papers and authorized patents have also increased significantly every year. In 2021, the College of science undertook major projects of the Ministry of science and technology for the first time, adding 11 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, including 2 general fund projects and 9 youth science funds. The amount of scientific research funds is more than 67 million yuan. and 78 papers on the three indexes were published by teachers.
The College of science pays attention to consolidating the mathematical foundation of students, and is committed to cultivating students to have both good mathematical and physical foundation and the combination of engineering practice ability and information science, and have the ability to engage in scientific research, software design and technology development in the fields of information and computing science, mathematics and applied mathematics, applied physics, photoelectric information science and engineering, Senior compound professionals who can engage in scientific research, teaching, application development and management in science and technology, education and high-tech industries.
Teachers guide students to participate in mathematical modeling competition. In the 2021 American College Students Mathematical Modeling Competition, they won two Finalist, one Meritorious and two Honorable Mentions. It also has won 3 national first prizes, 4 second prizes. In 2006, teachers guided students to win the special prize of the American College Students' mathematical modeling competition. Zhejiang University of technology became the eighth University in China to win the prize. In 2014, they guided students to win the highest prize of the National College Students' mathematical modeling competition - matlab Innovation Award, which is the only innovation award among the 22233 teams.
The College of science actively carries out foreign exchanges and cooperation, and has established friendly and cooperative relations with some famous universities in the United States, Britain, Japan and other countries.
