President Cai Yuanqiang addresses at the Ceremony. He congratulates all students on their success of becoming ZJUTers. He demonstrates “Four Admonishments of University” for freshmen which are quoted from Four “Fors” of the great Northern Song Dynasty scholar Zhang Hengqu----- To Set Heart for Heaven and Earth, To Set Life for Civilians, To Inherit Great Wisdom for Past Saints and To Initiate Peace and Prosperity for All Ages.
“To Set Heart for Heaven and Earth”, according to Cai, means setting the heart with heavenly principles, thus can be interpreted as holding fast to integrity and justice. Every student present is not bound to be a great man, but they can all be an upright individual. Cai hopes every freshman would dedicated to self-controlling and self-improving, and stick to dignity, principles, morals and integrity during their staying in ZJUT.
“To Set Life for Civilians” means finding the significance of life in the course of all people. The duty of university should be to equip students with the sense of social responsibility, the special spirit that can always been seen in the rest of their lives. Cai hopes freshmen would do something more “meaningful” than “delightful”.
“To Inherit Great Wisdom for Past Saints” means continuing the paused academic traditions of the saints begone. Learning, whose essence is a kind of reflecting and perceiving, cannot bring you material wealth, but it can help you understand the world better. Cai hopes freshmen would devote more time in the library since the true reading enables readers to investigate and delve into the essence of everything which can never be substituted by fragmentary information and exaggerated videos.
“To Initiate Peace and Prosperity for All Ages” means exploiting in the great course of tranquility and well-being for all the following generations, which was a sublime ideal in ancient China. The pursuit of the ideal in one’s lifetime is a process which has to depend on striving and struggling. Patriotism is not what you say but what you contemplate and practice you can do for the country and society. Cai hopes freshmen would think through what their ideals are and find their true selves in the path of persistent exploring and denying.
