On October.17th, the Wilczek Quantum Research Institute was founded in ZJUT, which was named after Frank﹒Wilczek, one of the most outstanding theoretical physicists in America, who won the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics.
University’s president Zhang Libin, together with Prof. Wilczek, Hanscom Smith, the U.S Consul General at Shanghai, Lu Guohao, deputy director of the Department of Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs of Zhejiang Provincial People's Government, inaugurated the institute. And the host of the ceremony was Xiao Gang, the vice president of ZJUT.
Zhang gave a brief introduction about the development of ZJUT. He also expressed his hope and demand for the bright future of the institute. He said that naming it as the Wilczek Quantum Research Institute would certainly bring opportunities for it to develop by leaps and bounds, which could expand its influence and appeal. With the support from Prof. Wilczek and the endeavor of all the members in the institute, it was expected for ZJUT to build up a high-level research institute based on the Wilczek Institute, promoting the overall development of basic subjects and even our university.
Prof. Wilczek extended his thankfulness to our efforts on the establishment of the institute. And he firmly believed that its future would be of hope.
Prof. Liu Wensheng from the University of Pittsburgh was appointed to the director of the institute. He was one of Prof. Wilczek’s students. And Prof. Wilczek himself would also offer comprehensive guidance to our institute.
Frank·Wilczek, an American theoretical physicists and mathematician, is a professor in the Department of Physics of MIT. He was awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of the asymptotic freedom in the quantum chromodynamics. He has made great contribution in fields such as particle physics and condensed state physics.
Liu Wensheng is a high-level oversea talent employed by ZJUT, who is also a professor of the University of Pittsburgh as well as a member in the national committee of the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics in Beijing. In 2007 he was conferred with the title of “the Outstanding Young Scholar “by the Oversea Chinese Physics Association.
The institute mainly focuses on the study of the basic principles of quantum mechanics, the fundamental properties of quantum and the application of quantum to the technical reformation. The establishment of the institute is not only crucial for promoting our university to a higher level, which will lead the development of physics and its related subjects, but also for the economic growth in Zhejiang province as it will upgrade some technical industries related to quantum to accelerate the regional economic development. Besides, it will also launch some public activities and offer education about quantum science in various ways to build up a unique base for scientific education in the field of quantum physics in Zhejiang.
Elizabeth Devine, Prof. Wilczek’s wife, Antti Niemi, an academician of the Finland Academy of Science and a member of the Royal Swedish Academy, Ou Yangtian, division chief of the News and Cultural Department of the U.S Consul General at Shanghai, Liu Wensheng, director of the Wilczek Quantum Research Institute, Wu Biao, a professor of Peking University, the deputy director of the International Centre for Quantum Materials and the appointed professor of Yunhe Project in ZJUT and other associates all attended the opening ceremony.
