On September 12th, the 2014 opening ceremony of ZJUT was held in the stadium of Pingfeng campus. University leaders Mei Xinlin, Zhang Libin, Xiao Ruifeng, He Zhiyun, Hua Ertian, Chen Jie, Li Xiaonian and Xiao Gang. Newly-arrived undergraduates and postgraduates, staff, and representatives of the parents also attended the ceremony, which was presided over by deputy Party secretary He Zhiyun.
President Zhang Libin spoke at the ceremony and extended his cordial welcome to these new arrivals. He thanked them for choosing ZJUT as a starting point of their brand-new future life. In his speech, he also explained what a university is, how wonderful ZJUT is and what students should do during these four years.
Zhang said in his speech that the existence of a university can be prolonged as long as it holds a free atmosphere for different thoughts. The most important function of a university is to influence every student by its unique culture, traditions and spirits, thus shaping who they are and distinguishing them from others. Their time at the University will prepare them for their future position within society. The aim of a university is to set high moral standards for students, to teach them right from wrong and to help them improve themselves, which is also the meaning of our motto “value morality and practice ” and the reason why one seeks for a higher education.
According to Zhang’s speech, ZJUT has a long history. Renamed in 1953, ZJUT was once called Zhejiang Intermediate Industrial School founded in 1910. It is the pioneer for the industrial development in Zhejiang and even plays a vital role in the history of Chinese industry as many good engineers and industrial workers came from ZJUT. Today, ZJUT has become a relatively influential comprehensive university and ranks amongst the top 100 universities in China. At ZJUT there are plenty of excellent professors who will spare no expense to help students. ZJUT is also the first university in the developed areas of the eastern coast to be under the guidance of the provincial government and educational department, and amongst the first universities to carry out the 2011 Plan. ZJUT intends to be a comprehensive research-oriented university with its own regional features by the year of 2020. At that time, ZJUT will rank within the top 50 university in China. And to achieve this goal, everyone in ZJUT must work very hard.
Zhang Libin also said that one should experience his life in his own way without the interference from parents or teachers. And he believed that every student was capable to make his own college life colorful. He advised freshmen to be more creative and wished them happiness. They should think more and seek the truth and answers for themselves instead of blindly following others. They should be innovative and lead the trend of our times. Love is the most precious thing in one’s life, so it is worthwhile to serve others as one will gain satisfaction in return. The so-called success is not the whole meaning of one’s life, as the pursuit of happiness is more important.
